PAVING NEXT
With a $40,000 sanitary sewerage system under construction, $15,000 being expended on our $65,000 water system and the initiative taken looking to the pavement of the principal business streets and one or more of the residence thoroughfares, to say nothing of the concrete walk now being laid, there is every indication that greater Checotah is to be realized in fact sooner than anticipated by the most sanguine booster.
SHOT DEPUTY
The Davis gang has added another to their long list of crimes and this section is stirred as possibly never before.
Most of the readers of The Democrat are familiar, at least in part, with the particulars of the killing of Deputy Sheriff Work, of Porum, at the Bob Davis farm near that place last Thursday evening.
It appears that Deputy Work had papers to serve on Davis and in company with other deputies went out to serve them.
Others besides Davis were on the farm and when Work attempted to perform his duty, he was shot down by either Davis or his pals who had taken refuge in the house.
SLAYS HIS MOTHER
A terrible tragedy was enacted near Eufaula at an early hour Tuesday morning when Bill Phillips riddled the body of his mother with bullets. Phillips had been drinking and arrived home at bout 1:30 a.m. and a quarrel with his mother followed when she upbraided him for his intoxicated condition. He became so enraged that he whipped out his revolver, shooting her four times.
Death followed before help could arrive.

Dixon to Retire from Coaching
Attendance was good at the 1975 All Sports Banquet as nearly 200 turned out to hear Cooch Larry Lacewell and to honor Checotah High School athletes.
The big surprise of the evening came when Supt. Bill Patton came to the rostrum to announce that after 24 years Coach Truman Dixon was retiring as coach to devote full time to administrative duties.
Coach Dixon had won his 500th game in the regionals at Warner this year.
Actually, this was the second surprise as the first was the announcement that the school board had voted (before knowing about the resignation) to name the Checotah Gym, Truman Dixon Fieldhouse.

County schools suffer deep budget cuts
Pirates with sharp blades took a big slice out of Oklahoma’s school budgets recently by only appropriating $30 million of a $300 million request.
At least, that’s the way Eufaula Superintendent Bill Wilson sees it.
“It just won’t work. You cannot pay out more than you bring in and keep from going bankrupt,” he said.
In their recent Special Session, state legislators approved approximately $30 million, 90 percent to the total requested by school districts statewide.
