The Eufaula man who died in a weather-related traffic accident last week has been identified as 94-year-old James Ward.
Eufaula Police Chief David Bryning said Ward was driving a 2008, dark-colored Nissan vehicle south on U.S. 69 near the Selmon Road exit when he lost control on the icy roadway.
The accident report stated that shortly before 10:40 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9 the vehicle rolled down the embankment on the west side of the road and came to a rest on its top.
Ward was ejected and was found 10 feet from his vehicle.
“At the time, Mr. Ward was conscious,” Bryning said.
An ambulance arrived about six minutes after the accident was reported and was en route to St. Francis Hospital in Muskogee.
“At 12:11 p.m. the police department received a call from an EMS worker that while en route to the hospital Mr. Ward passed away,” Bryning said.
On Thursday, roads and highways were treacherous because of snow and ice.
District 3 County Commissioner Bobby Ziegler happened along shortly after the accident and noted how slippery it was.
“I was behind the ambulance (arriving at the scene), and they about went over. My truck driver found the guy, barely breathing. I saw him laid out there about 30 feet (from where) he went off, went straight over,” Ziegler said.
