Saturday evening local firefighters responded to a medical emergency of a pregnant woman in labor who had not reached full-term.
Upon arrival the first firefighters walked in to the mother who had just delivered a premature newborn in the bathtub. Because the infant was blue and not crying, firefighters acted swiftly and were were able to get the infant to cry faintly and then finally start breathing on its own. Afterwards the firefighters worked together to keep the infant warm and responsive while also caring for the new mother.
Pafford EMS and Checotah EMS firefighters also responded to the scene and assisted the first responders.
Due to its fragile state, the infant was intubated and transferred to the hospital by Tulsa Life Flight, while the mother was transported to the hospital by ambulance.
FAIC Fire Chief Shawn Moore took to social media to say the following:“I’m so freaking proud of our team at the FAIC Fire Department! This is why we do what we do and train. All of them worked together to make sure the baby had the best chance to survive. It’s not every day as a Volunteer Fire Department that you respond and help with delivering and taking care of a baby! The teamwork between Checotah PD dispatch, EMS services and our fire department was like no other!”
Moore also stated that they had heard that the infant and mother were doing well and that the infant only weighed 2lbs.3oz.
