Death of a Boy
At the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Robbins, five miles northeast of this city on Tuesday occurred the death of John Robbins, aged 13, following an illness of four days of pneumonia. The funeral was held yesterday and the burial occurred at Nebo cemetery.

HIGH SCHOOL NOTES
Although many of the children of the schools are out picking cotton school has been carrying along as good as ever. The debate tryout will be next Friday, Oct. 24. The question for debate this year is “Resolved, That the child labor amendment to the federal constitution should be adopted.”
Boy Loses Both Legs in Railroad Accident Manuel O’Neal, 20, who gave his residence as Gainesville, Texas, suffered the loss of both legs Monday night at the Katy station when he fell asleep while riding the rods and fell under the wheels of a freight train.
He was given first aid by Dr. A.J. Snelson, company physician, and later taken to the Muskogee hospital where both limbs were amputated.

Employment Officer Coming On Monday Representatives of the national re-employment administration will be at the county court room in Checotah from 8:30 o’clock until noon Monday morning, October 22, to register unemployed me in this vicinity.
All men who have never registered under the CWA set up and those who desire to renew their cards will be given the opportunity of registering at the meeting here.
Falls and Breaks Leg While Playing
Junior Hilliard, 11, son of C.M. Hilliard of this city, suffered a broken leg last week as a result of a fall while playing with school mates near his home.
In scuffling Junior fell backwards and his right leg twisted beneath him. The bone was snapped completely in two. He was rushed immediately to a physician and is now confined to his bed in a heavy cast for two months.

DRAFT STATUS OF 26-YEARD-OLD MEN CHANGED
McIntosh county men over 26 years old, who were called in the recent drfar, have been given indefinite deferments, according to the announcement of Hugh Miller, member of the county draft board.
A high percentage of the selectees who made the trip to Tulsa for physical examination about a month ago will be affected by the new order, Miller said.
The change in draft status of the older group was ordered by the army, who already has sufficient men in this age bracket.
Soldiers are now being dropped from the U.S army at the rate of about 100,000 a month, many of whom have passed their 38th birthday.
Legion Sponsors Benefit Dance
A dance will be sponsored by members of the Checotah post of the American Legion Saturday night for benefit of the Legion Junior baseball team, Gene Parks, manager, announced.
The funds will be used to purchase equipment for the team. The admission will be 50 cents per couple. The public is invited.

O.G.&E. Ready to Install new line into city Work is expected to get underway east of Checotah within the next few weeks on an electric line to be constructed by the Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co. to provide Checotah and Eufaula with uninterrupted service.
Cotton Ginnings Far Ahead of 1948
Cotton ginning in McIntosh County is far ahead of last year with 2,315 bales reported up to Oct. 1 by the department of commerce.
At the same date last year only 96 bales had been ginned.
This year’s crop is not expected to exceed 7,500 bales, which is less than half of normal.

Wool Payments Are Likely
“Sheep farmers may get small payments for wool under the wool act for 1974 marketing,” said David Ogden, Chairman McIntosh ASCS County Committee. “Prices for this year’s wool will average between 60 and 65 cents per pound – below the 72cent incentive price.”
Farm prices of shorn wool now run below last year’s average 82 cents per pound; however, this year’s price stands substantially above the depressed levels of recent years.
Scout Troop is Organized
A Boy Scout troop was organized in Checotah Thursday night, Oct. 11 at the Methodist Church. They are Troop 142 and meetings will be held at the Methodist Church Fellowship hall on Tuesday nights at 7 p.m.
Robert Earhart is scoutmaster and Harold Parker is assistant scoutmaster.

Con artist swindling cash from Checotah’s elderly
Elderly Checotah residents should be on the lookout for a local scam artist that has swindled at least three people in the last two weeks.
According to victims, a man posing as a utility company employee, complete with hardhat and tools, has conned money right out of their living rooms.
Smart kids learning with smart boards
Checotah Marshall Elementary third grade students of Mrs. Roxann Hobbs are engaged in learning.
They are motivated in the classroom by the use of interactive whiteboards, called smart boards.
These smart boards, available to Checotah students grades kindergarten through 12, were purchased through a $100,000 technology grant from the Oklahoma State Department of Education.

The German Shepherd, owned by McIntosh County Deputy Sheriff Kevin Branscum, is foiling burglaries, capturing drug suspects and helping educate students throughout the county and beyond about crime.
