Prof. West, of Muskogee, has opened Tuckabatchee hall and will teach dancing. Class will meet every Tuesday and Saturday evening from 7 p.m. till 9 p.m. After 9 p.m. the hall will be open to the public. Dancers will be welcome provided they behave as ladies and gentlemen. Ladies are always admitted free to the dances.
Today has been set apart as a day of thanksgiving for the blessings of the year and if there is a people on earth who have occasion to be thankful they reside in the new state of Oklahoma, and particularly in this section of the commonwealth.
The crops have been bountiful and are nearly all garnered into the storehouse or converted into cash.

VERY NARROW ESCAPE
Misses Betty and Doris Niles of this city and Mises Katherine Whitenton and Genevieve Wilson of Henryetta had a very narrow escape from death in an auto smash at Henryetta about 5:30 o’clock Friday evening.
Following the football game, the four young ladies entered the Whintenton Ford coupe for a drive about town.
They were driving east on Cummings Street when the big Studebaker car driven by Cheesie McIntosh of this city crashed into them at the intersection of Fifth street.
KILLS BIG RATTLER
John Storms, well-known farmer residing southeast of this city, had an experience last week which he will not soon forget. Mr. Storms was busily engaged in plowing some land and glancing down as the plow turned over the soil noticed a large snake go under the furrow.
On his next trip through the field he noticed the head sticking through the earth and using a club killed the reptile. After pulling the snake from under the soil much to his surprise found that he had killed a large rattlesnake.
The reptile measured 6 feet, 1 inch in length and 8 Vi inches in circumference and had 9 rattles and 1 button. Mr. Storms skinned the snake and has the same on exhibit at his home.

PLANS FOR CITY LAKE COMPLETE
Rapid progress is now being made by the city council toward immediate construction of the Checotah lake project, it was stated by Mayor L.K. Sharpe this week.
About 35 acres of the 55 acres to be cleared at the lake site have been cleaned up and the timber removed from it by a force of county FERA workers. This work should be completed in about eight weeks, although it has had no connection with the letting of the contract for construction of the dam and other installations.
Goldie McCollum Gets Death Decree McAlester,Oct. 3 – Death penalties imposed here in the last week totaled six Wednesday when Judge Harve L. Melton sentenced three convicts to the electric chair.
With the six sentenced here and others to arrive from other parts of the state, the death row at the state prison will hold 14 prisoners, the largest number since the prison was established.
The three convicts sentenced Wednesday were Goldie McCollum, Howard Porter and John Williams.
McCollum was accused in the fatal knifing of Tom Wilkins and Vernon Huntler, convicts, and was tried and convicted for the slaying of Wilkins.

RECORD COUNTY GROUP DRAFTED FOR WAR ACTION A record group of candidates for Uncle Sams army and navy entered the services this week, Major Washington Grayson, chief clerk of the draft board reported.
COMMENCEMENT SET; LOW NUMBER OF GRADUATES
The 1944 graduation class of Checotah High School, the smallest in recent years, is composed of 16 girls and 14 boys, according to A. B. Childress, high school principal.
Minute Man Flag Presented Schools
Presentation of a Minute Man Flag to Checotah schools for outstanding achievement in war bond purchases was announced his week by school officials.

Local Girl Charges Husband In White Slavery Conspiracy A pretty 17-year-old Checotah farm girl wept at a U.S. district court trial in Bismarck, N. D. Wednesday after she testified her husband chained her to hotel beds and forced her to have relations with strange men.
The girls husband, Roland H. Davidson, former Tyler, Texas, radio singer, went on trial on a white slavery charge.
Manuel Roark Gets Semi-Pro Grid Job
Manuel Roark, former star tackle on the Checotah High school teams about 12 years ago, is member of the Modesto, Calif, semi-pro team which is a member of the Western Football Association including 12 teams on the Pacific coast.
Roark is 6 feet, 3 inches tall and weighs in at 250 pounds.

Grand Jury Probe Is Called For
A special Grand Jury investigation has been called for by petition of 245 voters in McIntosh County. The petition calls for an investigation of all McIntosh County Public Officials and probably will not get underway till after the November Election.
Boren Advances 3-Point Program
David Boren today advanced a three-point program “to make Oklahoma state government the most open and responsive in the nation.”
The Democratic gubernatorial nominee said if he is elected governor on Nov. 5, he will make his administration a model for the rest of the nation.

DC and Selby Minner plan get together for area artists
Given the size of its population and where it sits in the world, McIntosh County and the surrounding areas can boast of having a thriving artistic community.
However, these artists, musicians and writers that add so much flavor to Checotah and the surround areas are spread from one end of Eastern Oklahoma to another, from the dirt roads of Rentiesville to the lakeshores of Eufaula, from the streets of Muskogee to the backwoods of Stigler.
That’s why Selby Minner, one half of a legendary local blues duo (DC and Selby Minner), is working towards a meeting of the minds” at the Down Home Blues Club in Rentiesville.
Longtime Principal, Knight, dies at 88
George Ray Knight, 88, who served as principal, superintendent, basketball coach and well-known friend in the McIntosh County area for decades, passed away last Wednesday in Muskogee.
Fires Running Wild again
Wildfires in the Hitchita area on Feb. 16 came close to six or seven homes, but all were saved through the efforts of nine fire departments from McIntosh County and three from Muskogee Coun-

Arrowhead Stables at Arrowhead State Park has opened a Pumpkin Patch for the first time. It’s in addition to the annual Sasquatch Sightings Hayride Blacklight Barn of Mystery from dark to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays in October.
