Letter to the Editor The three living children of Checotah Girls Basketball Coach Herman Emerson wish to extend our sympathy to the family of Myrtle Wallace Frost who passed away Sept. 29. Our dad was fortunate to have Myrtle who was a star on his undefeated 1946 and 1947 Checotah Girls State Campion basketball team.
As the oldest sibling, I remember watching Myrtle and the other talented Checotah teammates win the Girls State Championships and undefeated season for the first time.
There was a huge string of cars lined up honking their horns as we were escorted victorious to Checotah.
After, Myrtle and Laura Pennington both were members of the All-American Redheads in Atlanta, Ga. The equipment manager would send our Dad used basketballs and other coveted equipment, which was like Christmas in the Fall in our house.
Thanks to Myrle and the many other Checotah girls basketball team players (6 players – 3 offense and 3 defense) our Dad coached nine successful seasons at Checotah before his death inl955.
His record of 239 – 23 earned him induction into the Oklahoma Girls Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1975. Thanks Myrtle, your work, skills, helping others and commitment to winning contributed immensely to our family as well as the community of Checotah during your high school and professional years.
