Arthur Marshall Seriously Injured

Arthur Marshall, who resides southwest of town, while working on a scaffold at the new home of Will Clark last Friday suddenly lost his balance and fell to the ground, a distance of several feet.

In the descent he alighted on a stake driven in the ground and was painfully injured in the back.

He was given prompt attention and late in the evening he was taken home and at last accounts was getting along as well as could be expected.

A Handsome Floor

Will Clark, the druggist, can now boast of one of the sightliest floors in eastern Oklahoma. It is inlaid linoleum, 12 feet wide, the only floor covering of that dimension ever laid in the city and attracts the admiration of all who have seen it.

Disgraceful Sunday Scene

Sunday morning just before the church hour Broadway was the scene of a disgraceful street brawl which drew a large crowd in a remarkable short time.

Two young men from the country were the belligerents and a woman took a hand in the set-to when it was at its height.

It appears that there was a little financial difference between the young men.

City Marshal Stout’s opportune arrival caused a scurrying of the combatants, one leaping into a saddle with a friend and hurriedly leaving town while the other sought refuge at a nearby hotel.

SWAT THE FLY By Dr. J. H. McCulloch County Health Officer

Concerning the matter of making a toilet flyproof, it is easy. In 30 minutes, any of them can be made fly-proof. It is only necessary to fix the box containing he fecal matter so that flies cannot get into it and you have done something which will save the lives of your own family and those of your friends and neighbors.

It doe absolutely no good for the sanitary man to come by once a month and clean out the toilet for the next day there is more fecal matter to soil the feet of your little flies.

Also, our little fly friends can get typhoid germs on their feet the very next day.

FDR To Get More Elbow Room

Even though the executive offices of the White House in Washington have been enlarged three times since 1900, there is still not enough working space there.

Accordingly, a new addition is being built. This will be an extension along nearly the entire east side of the office building, with a second story added.

WAR OF INSULTS

U.S. soldiers are catching on to the Jap tactic of shouting insults at the nearby hidden enemy to get him, in his rage, to disclose his place of concealment, a definitely fatal step.

U.S. Marines on Bougainville answered Jap insults by shouting “your emperor is a fool.” Japs stung to fury would scream in rage “Babe Ruth is a fool” Newberry said it took some time for the American boys to figure out that to the baseball loving Jap, Babe Ruth was still the most outstanding U.S. citizen.

LIONS DISCUSS CITY CANNERY PROJECT HERE

Possibility of locating a cannery in Checotah to handle the increasing acreage of truck crops in this vicinity was discussed at the meeting of the Checotah Lions club Thursday noon.

Feasibility of constructing a canning plant here has been under consideration by the Lions club for several years. Efforts to interest packers and wholesales of fruits and vegetables in the project have failed.

Candidate Against Dams On Arkansas

Lily Allen Lasley of Stigler announced her candidacy for the democratic nomination for congress this week, bringing to three the number of aspirants from the Haskell county town.

While most major candidates for congress are advocating dams for flood control, Mrs. Lasley comes out strongly against them.

She says: “I am for no dams. I am for levee controls along the Arkansas river. God made the rivers unobstructed – let’s keep them that way. Let’s take all money available and win the war.”
