Electric Storm Does Much Damage
Possibly the most severe electric storm in the history of the old Indian Territory side visited this section Friday night and for fully two hours piercing lightning and almost deafening peals of thunder followed each other in rapid succession, accompanied by rain almost amounting to a small deluge.
A Run on Gentry
The delivery horse owned by Allen & Smith and driven by Washington Dale created considerable excitement on Gentry Avenue yesterday afternoon. The horse became unmanageable near the depot when a portion of the harness broke and started in a mad race up the avenue.
The cart collapsed when opposite the Cantrell Mercantile store and Dale landed in the middle of the street while the horse, after hitting the sidewalk, slid into the alley.

Former Checotah Girl Enters Battle of Beauties
One after the other the civic clubs and social clubs of the city are entering and sponsoring girls who have been entered in the Tulsa-Atlantic City beauty contest, says the Tulsa Tribune.
The 52nd girl was entered in the contest this morning.
This lovely young lady is Miss Elizabeth Nash, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Nash.

••••• 90 Years Ago McIntosh County Democrat Thursday, August 2, 1934 “BLUE” HOWARD CAPTURED
“Blue” Howard, Checotah bandit, involved in a series of crimes including hijacking, bank robbery and suspected murder, closed a short career in his chosen profession this week when he was captured by McIntosh county officers after menacing the peace of eastern Oklahoma during the past two months.
Howard, who had been at large since he walked off from the county jail, was arrested by Special Officer Bill Counts, Chief of Police Lee Looper and Deputy Sheriff Save Martin west of Checotah on information furnished by a resident of the city who saw Howard sitting in his stranded automobile.
Sheriff Captures Prison Fugitive West of Eufaula An escaped convict from the state penitentiary, said to be Emmett Wilkerson, was captured by Sheriff John McQuillen and Deputy Dave Martin in a cornfield 10 miles northwest of Eufaula last Saturday afternoon.
The arrest was made after residents of the community reported to the sheriff ’s office that a man who was apparently carrying a submachine gun was in the area and had called for food at farmhouses.
Ask Stores Close Each Day To Pray For Needed Rain
Checotah and eastern Oklahoma is suffering to such a great extent from the drought that Mayor L.K. Sharpe has issued a proclamation that the stores of the city shall close for 30 minutes each day for community prayer to be continued until rain comes.

Noted Cartoonist To Appear On Stage
Bob Briggs, noted cartoonist and musician, will appear at the high school auditorium at 8 o’clock Monday night in the final lyceum program of the season, according to A.B. Childress, high school principal.
Heavy Snow Hits City Sunday Night
Checotah and its vicinity was hit by a heavy snow Sunday night, when a total of five inches was recorded by Golden Berry, local weatherman, reported.
The white blanket melted quickly Monday and Tuesday, as country roads became almost impassable.
Crop land was materially aided by the additional moisture, and the land is now said to be in fine shape for breaking.

Wets To Campaign on Strict Facts A straight shooting, fact proof campaign showing the many benefits prohibition repeal will bring to Oklahoma has been announced.
COUNTY RURAL ROAD PROJECTS ARE OUTLINED School Bus and Mail Routes to Be Surfaced With Gravel Construction details of the new system of rural roads to be built in McIntosh County under provisions of recent acts of the legislature were discussed by members of the road committee of the McIntosh County Farm Bureau and state highway officials at a special meeting last Friday.
A one-cent gasoline tax on every gallon of gasoline sold in the state will finance the program, which calls for permanent bridges and culverts and a 16foot gravel roadbed to be constructed on all school bus and mail routes.

69 Bypass To Open Next Week
The long-awaited Checotah by-pass will be officially dedicated by Gov. Hall next Wednesday, Aug. 14, at 11 a.m.
The ceremony will take place under the bridge at the interchange of the new U.S. 69 bypass and US 266, west of Checotah.
18 Year Olds Still Required To Register
Registration with the Selective Service System is required of all young men turning age 18, under Federal law. There are no more inductions into the Armed Forces but the law still requires registration.

Holiday Lights Tour Underway
It may be Thanksgiving, but down at the Deep Fork Campgrounds, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
The annual Holiday Light Tour at Lake Eufaula State Park will let McIntosh County residents motor through dozens of holiday light scenes from tomorrow until Dec. 23.
