A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Open House was held Friday, August 2 for the new OSU extension office at 311 N. Broadway in Checotah.
The office recently moved to Checotah from Eufaula and according to staff has seen an increase in their day to day interest in the county.
“Since we opened the doors two weeks ago we have been pleasantly surprised by everyone stopping in to welcome us and get information,” Pam Ward said. “We have also been very busy with our 4-H students. We have been teaching them how to cook for the Dutch oven contest, cake decorating contest, the state fairs and more.
4-H students attend a district contest in July and local fairs to compete.
“My son Cutter, since learning to cook a few things, is always asking if he can cook in the kitchen now.”
There are also nutrition classes, diabetes education classes, meals on a budget and much more that the OSU Extension office provides. Ward stated that they are in the process of planning a canning class which is becoming a lost art in many households.
“Due to groceries being so expensive now, we are getting a lot more people who want information on canning, gardening and basic homesteading ideas and we can provide that information.”
Ward also stated that volunteers are always needed but must go through training to be certified and have a background check. The next class will be Aug. 20 for those interested and they can call the OSU Extension office for more information.
The OSU Extension office will also have an OSU Mobile Virtual Care van that will offer free convenient basic medical care visits for any age group. This is another way the OSU Extension office hopes to connect with residents and help them manage their health. More information will be made available in the near future regarding the mobile care unit and residents can stop by the office during the week.
