Eufaula Bank Suspends
First National closes its doors but officers prepare to pay depositors in full
The First National Bank of Eufaula, one of the oldest institutions in eastern Oklahoma, was closed by decision of the board of directors Monday. The bank had a capital of $50,000 and carried approximately $250,000 in deposits. This is the second bank difficulty in the past three weeks, the Oklahoma State bank, a smaller institution, having closed its doors previously.

Council holds ray of hope on waterworks A faint ray of hope that the city of Checotah will be granted a $40,000 cash loan by the federal government with which to build a waterworks system here, is held by members of the city council and Mayor L.K. Sharpe, it was stated here this week.

C.E. Foley, Pioneer Eufaulan is dead
C.E. Foley, pioneer Eufaula citizen and early day merchant and banker died last Saturday afternoon.
He organized the First National Bank at Eufaula and was a former Mayor of Eufaula.

Wilson participates in Arctic War Games Kenneth E. Wilson, seaman apprentice, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.F Wilson of Checotah is participating in sub-arctic war games in Alaskan waters while serving on board the Aircraft Carrier Boxer with the Pacific fleet.
19 candidates to make race for city jobs
Benny Rego to make race for Mayor against Koch Nineteen candidates filed for city and school board offices this week.
The races this year have drawn unexpected interest with one of the largest lists of candidates in recent years.

Postman saves lives of three children
Quick action on the part of Roy Reynolds, local postman, saved the lives of three children when he rescued them from a burning house.
Renyolds, who was delivering the mail, noticed smoke curling around the door of the two-room house.
He pushed the door open and discovered the three children who had been left in the house by their mother.
The oldest child was four years old.

March 5, 1959 Buying policies of government land appraisers in the Eufaula Reservoir area are highly inconsistent, it is shown in a survery recently completed by this newspaper.
The government is offering to pay far more than some smaller tracts are actually worth, while on the more valuable second bottom farms there offers are $150 to $200 an acre under replacement cost for similar type land elsewhere.

L.K. Sharpe, City Civic leader dies Sunday
Checotah lost its most outstanding citizen Sunday.
In 1916 he entered the dry goods business with Walter Brumley.
He sold his interest to Brumley after volunteering for duty in France during World War I, where he fought in the front line trenches as a private in ranks.
After the war he entered the dry good business again, building and expanding to a chain of 13 stores in the state.

County residents robbed by prisoners
Two McIntosh County residents went through quite the ordeal last Friday.
Two honor farm escapees took control of the prison bus in which they were being transported and stopped it at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lovelace who live west of Warner.
They stole some mens clothing, a shotgun and a 1970 Falcone and made their getaway.
The escapees wrecked the car a short time later near Tiger Mountain. They then hitched a ride in a pickup truck and were apprehended a short time later.
