Daniel Thomas Vargas, 36, of Eufaula, was charged Wednesday with assault & battery with a dangerous weapon and with threatening to perform an act of violence.
The alleged assault took place at the Family Dollar store on Main Street on Friday, Jan. 19, causing a brief shut-down of the nearby high school.
Associate District Judge Brendon Bridges entered a not guilty plea on behalf of Vargas and set bond at $75,000.
A pre-preliminary conference will be held at 9 a.m., Feb. 6.
Vargas also was ordered to stay away from Eric Ritter, the alleged victim of the assault.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Eufaula Police Officer Freeman Degraffenreid, on Jan. 19 Vargas threw a piece of concrete at Ritter, striking him in the palm of his left hand causing it to bleed.
The suspect left the scene but was arrested a few hours later.
