Obituaries
January 11, 2024
Thomas ‘Tom’ Hagan Jr.

Thomas “Tom” Hagan Jr., 90, of Porum, passed away on Dec. 23, 2023.

He was born on Nov. 7, 1933 to Thomas Hagan Sr and Gladys Ruby Gregg in Brush, Colorado. His mother was re-married to Raymond Stickley when Tom was a young boy. Raymond Stickley and his mother Gladys Stickley raised him.

Tom served briefly in the United States Army when he was 18. He was a master of many different trades, and there was not a job that he was afraid to do. He held many different positions throughout his life. He was especially proud of his success with stockcar racing and loved all things Ford. He raced at multiple different speedways in the United States and will be inducted into the Hall of Fame posthumously at Cottage Grove Speedway in Oregon this fall. Other positions he held throughout his life included boxing, electrical power pole work, equipment operator, owning a car lot, various types of factory work, oilfield work, auto mechanic, helping to build multiple dams throughout the United States, and of course his favorite daily job of always keeping his family and friends laughing.

Tom married Sybol Faye Turpin in Okmulgee, Oklahoma in 1955. On May 10, 2024, the two would have celebrated 69 years of marriage.

He loved gospel singing and playing guitar. He sang at the Plum Theater and Hoffman Theatre in Oklahoma and at different points of his life played and sang with different bands. For many years, he would travel to multiple locations throughout Oklahoma including various churches and assisted living centers to share his gift of music. Tom enjoyed people. He never met a stranger and would help anyone in need.

Tom is survived by his wife, Sybol Hagan of the home; sons, Stephen Watson of California and Vincent T. Hagan of Oklahoma; daughter, Tonna Thompson of Kansas; grandchildren, James Watson, Jason Steinhable, Nicole Simon, Cassandra York, Bridgetta Webb, Marcillene Hagan-Witkowski, Montana Boldon and Dakota Hagan; 18 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren, with a 9th on the way.

His parents and his siblings preceded him in death.

Honoring Tom, cremation is planned. His family will have a headstone in honor of him, among his family members at Triplett Cemetery. A memorial service will be held later in March of 2024. Hunn Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 211 W. Okmulgee, Checotah, Oklahoma 74426 is assisting the family.
