Associate District Judge Brendon Bridges has ordered a competency hearing for a man who recently attempted to ood the county jail.
Edward Arthur Goss, 40, of Salida, Colo., was initially arrested on May 15 and charged with possession of methamphetamine, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and public intoxication.
On May 17, while awaiting a hearing, Goss allegedly broke a sprinkler head and water began _ooding areas of the jail.
Deputy Maekisha Todd was in an o_ce at the jail at the time.
“Deputy Chip Collins and myself started grabbing blankets out of the laundry room to start blocking the water from getting everywhere,” Todd wrote in a probable cause a_davit ed at the time of Goss’ being charged on June 5 with injuring or burning a public building.
According to Todd, while the sprinklers were spreading water Goss turned on a shower that began _ooding his cell. He reportedly was sliding back and forth in his cell and drinking the water that was coming out of the sprinkler system.
Jail Administrator Monica Smith ordered Goss placed in a restraint chair while jail trustees and several employees of the jail cleaned up the water and the sprinkler was repaired.
At a June 7 hearing Goss appeared before Bridges by way of video and would not cooperate with the jail sta.
Bridges ordered a mental observation and evaluation for Goss, whose next appearance in court will be at 9 a.m., June 28.
